In 1995, Design South was commissioned to transform an existing 11,400 square foot Army Reserve Center into a specialized secondary education facility. Modifications included renovations for compliance with State requirements for high school facilities and the conversion of an existing firing range/assembly hall to four classrooms and a multi-purpose room, including kitchen area.
Less than three years after beginning its service, the Anderson County Alternative School was in need of additional space to accommodate middle school students. An existing vehicle maintenance building was renovated into three classrooms, student and staff toilet rooms, and custodial storage. A covered walkway was also included to provide connection to the existing high school building.
Similarly, only two years after the opening of the middle school, the need arose for additional space. Design South was once again commissioned to design and administer construction of an addition to the existing middle school building. Five classrooms were created as well as an entry foyer, staff break room, and student toilet facility. Each project on the campus also includes the life safety, security, and communications systems required for such specialized use. As the Alternative School continues to expand its facilities and service, Design South is proud to have played a part in the betterment of the lives of the children of Anderson County.
